MAN GOES ON RAMPAGE AGAINST OFFICERS IN JEFFERSON COUNTY

A man is in custody in Jefferson County, after allegedly assaulting a police officer. The officer was responding to a house after getting a call about a man who was said to be drunk, and who was assaulting family members there. Matthew Hawkins of Irondale was arrested, and as police were putting him in the back of their cruiser, one officer was hit in the back of the head several times by Hawkins’ foot. Hawkins then tried to escape, but he was chased down by the officer, who was then taken to the emergency room, suffering from a concussion due to having been kicked in the head by Hawkins. Police say in addition to injuring the officer, Hawkins also did a lot of damage to the police car. They say he broke a window, kicked the door so hard that it actually bent the door frame… so that now the door won’t even close completely. Hawkins is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on bond of $250,000.
